The Tirohanga Whanui Bridge is a joint project by Watercare and the NZ Transport Agency. It provides a pedestrian and bike-friendly crossing between Pinehill and the East Coast bays with spectacular views in all directions. This beautiful, but highly corrosive environment (being close to the ocean), meant that coatings that gave maximum protection to the elements were vital to the success of the project.
Lumen was charged with carrying out the inspections on the numerous protective coatings used throughout its construction.
The scale and magnitude of the bridge made this a very interesting and comprehensive project. The bridge had to be transported in sections from the workshop in Whangarei to Auckland. This meant Lumen staff had to conduct inspections at several points right throughout the initial build in the Whangarei workshop, as well as during the installation process as the parts were reassembled and “touched up” onsite.
The iconic bridge is now complete and provides locals with an environmentally friendly way to commute to and from work.
